We Are Here, By Geoffrey Blainey - 1495 Words

In the book, We Are Here, by Cat Thao Nguyen, she writes about the life of her family, the oppressive persecution they all suffered at the hands of the Communist government along with its new regime. This book portrays members of Nguyen’s family, their plight, during and after the Vietnam War, including, the struggle, during their escape, from Vietnam, via Cambodia, Thailand, then, Australia. In addition, it will establish that the Australian social structures of the day had the ability to dehumanise Vietnamese immigrants during the years of 1973 to 1980. The next decade saw the CPV’s rationalist installation of a Stalinist-style centrally planned economy† (Nguyen, 2016, p. 33). The social structure of Vietnam based on total control, Nguyen’s family like many others found it impossible to adjust to the tyranny imposed by the Communist regime, therefore, they fled Vietnam! The Red Cross relocated Nguyen’s family into a Thai military encampment situated on the Thailand-Cambodia boundary, in a region named Aranyaprathet, as there were no official refugee camps, there. Nguyen, in her book, describes her Mother’s experience, when she â€Å"heard the grotesque, wild and violent sounds of random beatings† and that â€Å"she tried hard not to be sick each time, she heard human flesh being pounded† (Nguyen, 2015). There were â€Å"men and women who worked with Vietnamese refugees in transit camps, in Southeast Asia [Thailand], beginning in the late 1970’s† (Vu Satzewich, 2016).
